SEATTLE — Photos are all Marian White has left of her son, Justice, whose murder has never been solved.

“I honestly did think that someone was going to be caught, and we’d have a trial and it would be over with,” she said.

Justice White was just 25 years old when he went to a club on Capitol Hill on a fateful night in August 2006. Surveillance cameras captured the man talking outside the club. Police believe someone who was also at the club that night later killed him.

Seattle, WA – “Sold Out, but I we will be back for the next showing” is what many movie Red Tails movie goers were saying as they walked away from the box office this past weekend at the Southcenter AMC theater and many across the country. It was that kind of commitment to see the movie that helped the Lucas Film production garner the #2 spot at the box office this past weekend, bringing in over $19 Million dollars behind the new Underworld Film, according to the Hollywood Reporter and other industry reports.

The 4:35PM showing at SouthCenter was sold out in part by The Silent War, who with the help of DJ KUN LUV and community partners, where able to take 130 youth and families to see the movie. Through community contributions and support from Seattle Parks and Recreation, $1500.00 was raised and 200 tickets we purchased. Youth workers from the Seattle area brought in groups along with families who wanted to insure that their children would be able to see this historic film.

“Although race is meaning less and less to our young people today, it is important that we continue the telling of American history and the many contributions that African Americans made to it.”, said Rev. Harriett Walden, “It’s positive portrayal of Black Men helps to build Self-Esteem and Pride”

Participants in the screening received background information and links to find out more about the Real Tuskegee airmen courtesy of Black Past. The informative, non-profit website made all of its entries related to the subject available for reprint and went on to post a link here. Presidential Photo booth was on hand to take complimentary photos as people left the theater.

Due to the winter storm that slammed the Seattle area, some of the scheduled youth groups were not able to attend the opening weekend, however those additional tickets will be used at screening s this upcoming weekend.

Head down, eyes focused on the ground, Plaxico Burress swayed back and forth like a receiver in the huddle waiting for the next play.

By BARRY WILNER

AP Pro Football Writer

NEW YORK —

Head down, eyes focused on the ground, Plaxico Burress swayed back and forth like a receiver in the huddle waiting for the next play.

He wasn’t on a football field, hasn’t been on one for more than two years. Burress was listening to an introduction at the National Urban League before he spoke his piece. When the time came, Burress couldn’t have been more positive about rehabilitating his image.

“I’m a champion on the field, and my goal is to be a champion in life and off the field,” he said.

Burress, released from prison last week after spending nearly two years in jail on a weapon possession charge, will work with the National Urban League and Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

The 33-year-old former New York Giant and Pittsburgh Steeler said Monday he will be mentored by Magic Johnson and Tony Dungy. He’ll volunteer at Urban League youth programs and recruit other pro athletes to the program, and he’ll speak out for gun control.

“I’m eager and excited about the next step, not knowing where it will be,” he said. “I’m dedicated to change and just being a better person.”

The next step on the field is anyone’s guess, thanks to the lockout. Burress and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, can’t speak to any teams about the free agent receiver.

The next moves away from football will be making appearances through the Urban League to speak with youngsters about where Burress went wrong and how they can avoid similar failures. Burress has pledged to devote 30 hours to help fight childhood obesity, promote mental and physical health and fitness, all in keeping with terms of probation.

Burress also will lecture on the dangers of owning or carrying a firearm. The Brady Center is the nation’s largest public interest organization dedicated to ending gun violence in this country. The center pressed for him to go to prison but ended up supporting his ultimately unsuccessful efforts to get work release last year.

“I made a bad decision and it all can be taken away from you so quick,” Burress said at the Urban League headquarters on Wall Street. “You have to be cognizant of every decision you make and what impact it can have.”

Dungy has helped Michael Vick after the quarterback served 16 months in a federal prison for his role in a dogfighting ring. He visited with Burress when the player was incarcerated, and Dungy readily agreed to serve as a mentor for Burress when asked.

Dungy believes Burress gained perspective doing hard time the past two years.

“I don’t think playing football is the most important thing for him, although he wants to play,” the Super Bowl-winning coach with the Indianapolis Colts said. “I think family and contributing to (society) and making a difference in a positive way is very important to Plaxico.”

Burress caught the winning touchdown in the 2008 Super Bowl. Nine months later, his unlicensed handgun accidentally went off in a Manhattan nightclub, striking his thigh.

He said he would tell other players: “If you’re going to carry a weapon, make sure you’ve done everything properly, that you’re obeying all the laws or the rules of that state, and you know fully how to operate the weapon if you choose to carry one.”

Owning a firearm has become the norm in the NFL. Dungy, who retired after the 2008 season, recalled that at the first meeting of every training camp, he would ask how many players owned weapons. As many as 90 percent would raise their hands.

“That’s the society we live in,” he said. “They feel they have to get a gun to protect themselves or because everyone else is doing it. That doesn’t need to be the situation.”

—

AP Sports Writer Tom Canavan and AP Writer Jennifer Peltz contributed to this story.

Seattle police are looking to provide a visible police presence in neighborhoods where people tend to congregate on hot summer nights.

For the second consecutive summer, uniformed Seattle police will be patrolling into the wee hours on Fridays and Saturdays in areas of the city where people congregate, according to Seattle’s mayor and police chief.

Mayor Mike McGinn and Police Chief John Diaz announced on Monday that the “Citywide Late Night Public Safety Emphasis” will kick off Friday and continue each weekend until sometime in September.

Last summer, the late-night emphasis was created in response to a series of early-morning shootings in Belltown, most of which occurred after patrons of the neighborhood’s bars and taverns spilled onto the streets after closing time.

But violent incidents aren’t the impetus for this year’s emphasis, said Diaz, pointing out that the city is enjoying historically low crime rates.

Last summer’s emphasis was “a success in the reduction we’ve seen in the number of shootings” and helped create “a sense of a safer city,” he said. Still, even as crime rates go down, “people’s fear of crime is going up” and one way to counter that fear is to have a highly visible police presence, the chief said.

“People feel safer when they see uniformed officers,” McGinn said. Responsible club and restaurant owners have created a vibrant nightlife for residents and visitors alike, while irresponsible owners have been threatened with citations or even shutdown, he said.

While last summer’s late-night patrols focused on Belltown, the downtown core and Pioneer Square — with some smaller patrols on Capitol Hill and in Fremont — this summer, police will target 12 districts in the city, including a couple that aren’t readily considered nightlife hot spots. West Seattle’s High Point neighborhood, for instance, may not be a bastion of nightclubs and restaurants, but it is a place where large numbers of people tend to congregate at night, McGinn said.

At a news conference at West Seattle’s Don Armeni Park, which is named for a King County sheriff’s deputy who was fatally shot in September 1954, McGinn and Diaz emphasized that the late-night patrols, which will have 15 to 25 officers on duty until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, won’t deplete resources from one area of the city in favor of another or impact officers responding to 911 calls.

The officers participating in the emphasis will be drawn from the department’s Anti-Crime Teams and SWAT and traffic-safety units.

At the start of each Friday and Saturday night, a lieutenant will decide how to disperse the late-night patrol officers through the city — perhaps concentrating them in one or two neighborhoods, or deploying them more evenly in the 12 districts identified by the department’s precinct commanders.

“This is pretty dynamic,” Diaz said, explaining that a neighborhood’s history of problems will play a role in determining where and when officers are deployed.

Diaz said officers involved in the emphasis can be readily moved “if things are heating up in another part of the city.”

The players in a New Year’s Eve drive-by shooting and a related assault in Oak Harbor have all pleaded guilty to their respective crimes.

Island County Deputy Prosecutor Eric Ohme said he was able to reach plea bargains over the last few months with the three men involved in the unusual case.

Oakland, Calif., resident Christopher Williams, also known as “Dookie,” pleaded guilty to one count of drive-by shooting. Williams, 23, was sentenced to three years and three months in prison, which is the top of the standard sentencing range.

Oak Harbor resident Timothy Howard, 30, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit assault in the second degree. He was sentenced to 70 days in jail.

Shaunyae Allen, a 25-year-old man known as “Chytown,” pleaded guilty to assault in the second degree and possession of a stolen firearm. He was the victim in the drive-by shooting, but afterward pointed a gun at the wrong person in a bungled retaliation attempt. The judge sentenced Allen to a year and five months in prison.

It took detectives in the Oak Harbor Police Department weeks to sort out the tangled details from reluctant witnesses.

The violence started outside the Element Nightclub at closing time. Allen got into a fight with a group of women and sustained a head injury after someone hit him over the head with a pink bottle.

One of the young women involved in the fight called her nephew, Williams, and told him that Allen had hit her. Williams and his uncle, Howard, went out looking for revenge against Allen.

According to Ohme, Howard apparently thought he and his nephew were going to beat up Allen and he didn’t know Williams was armed with a handgun.

Allen was driving home in his girlfriend’s car when the two men in a green Jeep SUV pulled up next to his car on NW Cathlamet Drive. Williams was in the Jeep’s passenger seat and shot at Allen, hitting the car twice but missing Allen.

The police later recovered two bullets from the car and four empty shell casings on NW Cathlamet. The casings were identified as Hornady .380-caliber autos.

After being shot at, Allen drove to his apartment on Crosby Avenue. He happened to see a woman, who he mistakenly thought was involved in the fight at the nightclub, standing outside a neighboring apartment building. He walked over, pointed a gun at her and uttered a threatening remark.

According to Ohme, both Williams and Howard fled to Oakland after the shooting. Howard returned on his own, but Williams was arrested on an Island County warrant.
